All websites on the internet have an IP address, that helps browsers find them on the internet and fetch information. But how can you find the IP address of a website quickly? We’ve discussed 3 easy ways to do that.
Knowing the IP address of a website can be helpful for:
- Facilitating network troubleshooting, such as when ascertaining the cause of a failed network connection.
- Enable control of remote administration.
- Blocking certain sites
- Accessing blocked websites
Finding IP addresses on the internet can be tricky for non-technical folks.
How to Find the IP Address of a Website?
1. Ping Command
It is a Windows Command Line command. Ping contacts the website with a name and reports the IP address of the website back.
Follow these methods to get the IP address of a website:
- Open the command line prompt on your Windows.
- Open the search bar
- Type in ‘cmd’
- Select the Command Line tool
- Type in the following command and press enter-
ping example.com
Along with the other information, the command will return the IP address of the website you asked for. It will look something like this-
You can also lookup for a website’s IP on iOS and Linux by using the Ping Command as well.
All you have to do is open the CLI, and type in the above command.
- Open Command line in Linux:
Press Ctrl+Alt+T
2. Open Command Line or Terminal on Mac:
Go to the Applications folder, click on utilities, and select the Terminal icon.
2. Check your Welcome Email
Hosting companies send the IP address of the server your website is located on, in a welcome email. If you can’t find it, then contact your hosting company‘s support.
3. Use Lookup Services Like WHOIS
WHOIS is a protocol that queries databases containing registration information of an internet resource. It is used to find the IP address of a website, along with other information.
However, I’d recommend using other methods first, as it does not always reveal the IP address information.
To find the IP address of a website server this way, first, visit any website offering WHOIS database query and response services. For example whois.net.
Search for the domain name of the website whose IP you want to fetch.
Interestingly, even the website is offline or unavailable, WHOIS will still give you the IP address because it stores IPs statically in a database. Whereas the Ping command won’t find the IP address of a website if it is not online.
Apart from WHOIS, you can also visit websites like whatismyipaddress.com if you want to find the IP address of your own website only.
Summary
Using the Ping command, checking your welcome email, or using lookup services are the three top ways to find the IP address of website server. If there are any other methods you know, do mention them in the comments below!
